A Guide to Miami Cruise Port & Terminals 2023

cruise port miami

In this review, you will find quite a few helpful insider tips about the port of Miami, regardless of whether you are a savvy cruiser or have a cruise scheduled from Miami for the first time. If your cruise line has a broad boarding window (something like noon to 4 p.m.), then you can arrive at any point during that window. We suggest waiting until the second half of the boarding window to actually arrive. There is usually a big rush of people who want to board as early as possible, leading to longer lines. Waiting a little later can make check-in a breeze as the crowds have died down.

(expanded) MSC Terminal F

There is a private Express Shuttle company providing shared rides which must be booked in advance. Continue over the bridge and follow the signs to your terminal. MSC has broken ground on their new cruise terminal slated to open in 2023 and will be able to hold up to three ships at once. Here’s a rendering of the new terminal, built in partnership with Fincantieri (who is currently building the MSC Seashore at their shipyard in Italy). Opened late 2021 with the arrival of Virgin’s Scarlett Lady, this state of the art terminal  – Palm Grove – is located on the north west side of the port (see link to map below). Over five times the size of the Titanic, the Icon of the Seas is over 1000 feet long and 20 decks tall.

This upscale area includes an outdoor mall, plenty of restaurants, bars and nightlife, plus a good selection of mid-range hotels. Coconut Grove is a trendy, but comfortable spot to spend some time. All parking areas at cruise terminal and Lot 2 are open on cruise days only.

Virgin Voyages has brand's name on a for-profit train connecting Miami with West Palm Beach (via Aventura and Boca Raton). Virgin's cruise operations from PortMiami were planned to start in April 2020 with Scarlet Lady. On November 28, 2018, Richard Branson (Virgin Group's Founder) and Tom McAlpin (Virgin Voyages' President and CEO) officially announced the plans for a new/exclusive cruise terminal in PortMiami.

Wheelchair and Accessibility at Port of Miami

Either driving trough Downtown Miami – can be chaotic but not too bad on weekend early mornings – or trough the Port Tunnel. The latter is advisable unless you are staying in a hotel Downtown or in Miami Beach. The Tunnel entrance/exit is on MacArthur Causeway (I-395) that connects mainland Miami to South Beach, right in the middle of Watson Island (very close to the mainland). Naturally, when disembarking a cruise ship, most travelers want to get out of the port as fast as possible either to get home or to explore Miami before getting on a flight. Although the same transport limitations to embarkation apply, there are a few interesting alternatives.

Miami cruises often range from nights providing cruisers with a variety of different entertainment and dining options. It’s not hard to find places to shop in Miami, but if there’s a particular type of shop you’re after, certain areas of the city are best. The Design District of Miami is known for its art galleries and high-end boutiques. We don’t recommend or discourage any of the following car services (we’ve never used them), but provide them as a starting point for you to see what’s available. We can’t list every shuttle service here as there are quite a few of them. Note that we don’t recommend or suggest against any particular company as we haven’t used them.

In fact, many of the same companies that provide shared shuttle service also have private car service too. Carnival, for example, offers a shuttle from the Miami airport to your cruise for $23 one-way/$46 round trip per person. The same shuttle runs about $37 one-way/$74 round-trip per person from the Fort Lauderdale airport. One thing to note is that we know of no hotels in Fort Lauderdale with shuttles to the Port of Miami. For hanging out before or after a cruise, the Bayside section of downtown Miami can’t be beat. Just over the bridge from PortMiami, there are lots of things to do such as the Frost Museum of Science, Bayfront Park, and the Bayside Marketplace.

Here are also homeported two of RCI's largest liners - Allure of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas. The new facility was designed by Arquitectonica and built by Fincantieri Infrastructure. It is adjacent to Royal Caribbean's Terminal A. Construction works started on March 10, 2022, with scheduled completion and inauguration in December 2023. The new MSC Terminal can handle three large vessels simultaneously (max daily passenger capacity 36000) and is fitted with shorepower connectivity.

The 3-story facility has a VIP lounge, advanced security screening, check-in counters, and conveyor baggage system. Part of it has been incorporated into the new Terminal B construction. When it comes to cruising, there’s simply no bigger — or busier — port than the Port of Miami. Also known as PortMiami, the cruise side of the port handles about 6 million passengers in a typical year, making it the most popular starting point for cruises on the entire planet. You can also bring a companion along for free (actually, just the cost of the ticket's taxes) if you have the Southwest Companion Pass. Delta also offers a companion certificate via several of its American Express-branded credit cards.

Most cruise lines provide shuttles for passengers arriving from across the U.S. and beyond at Miami International Airport. These transfers can be arranged in advance online or by calling to the cruise line (2 to 4 days prior to sailing depending on which cruise line). This makes PortMiami the preferred departure destination to the Caribbean, Mexico and beyond. Terminal D was opened in 2007 and upgraded in 2013 to accommodate the new generation of larger Carnival cruise ships.

While still very much urban, Brickell offers a more suburban feel. Plenty of hotels are found in the neighborhood, which also offers fantastic dining and shopping at Mary Brickell Village. To the north is Midtown and the hip Design District, while Cuban culture flourishes with authentic Latin restaurants and shops in Little Havana to the west. Coconut Grove is a lush part of the city with historic sites, fine dining and luxury hotels. Cruise line transfers are not cheap at are charged per person.
